The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden has achieved some remarkable feats, and MMM Publisher Rasa Dregva is well aware of the positive impact it's having. She recalls travelling to Africa with the Sanctuary, and tells of new success with the 'Big Cats in Crisis' campaign
A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to travel to Africa with the Big Cat Sanctuary. After flying into Nairobi and taking a bumpy six-hour bus ride, I arrived at Ol Pejeta—a sprawling not-for-profit conservancy that the Smarden-based charity works closely with.
Eye-opening experience in Africa
I had an amazing experience being so close to the animals. It was eye-opening to witness, firsthand, the challenges these magnificent creatures face and the delicate environment they depend on. I also truly came to understand just how vital fundraising is in protecting them.

It was tough work—this was no resort—but it was deeply rewarding. Being there made me realise the true power of fundraising—how every pound raised goes directly towards food, veterinary care, habitat preservation, and security. The difference it makes to the lives of these animals is incredible. Without continued support, many of them simply wouldn’t survive.

“ The Big Cat Sanctuary has been close to my heart for many years—even before MMM was born.”
That trip had a profound impact on me, strengthening my determination to support their mission in any way I could.
Since then, MMM has proudly supported their fundraising efforts. Just last year, we helped stage a charity ball at the stunning Champney’s Eastwell Manor—an unforgettable evening made possible by the generosity of our clients, readers, and friends.
Welcoming lions from Ukraine
In March, the Big Cat Sanctuary announced the official opening of its Lion Rescue Centre and the safe arrivals of its first inhabitants – five rescued lions from war-torn Ukraine.

Again, this is a cause close to my heart. I grew up in Lithuania and remember only too well the restrictions living under Russian rule. Ukraine’s fight for freedom has been one I have stood behind, steadfastly, ever since.
Lions Rori, Amani, Lira, and Vanda joined Yuna, who was rescued back in August 2024, following a ten-month rescue mission.
The mission behind the rescue
The rescue was spear-headed by Cam Whitnall of the sanctuary who successfully led a campaign to raise £500,000 to build the Lion Rescue Centre and give the amazing animals the forever home they deserve.
These beautiful cats have been severely neglected, confined to concrete enclosures, used for illegal breeding or kept as family pets.
Their new habitats have been specially designed to provide each lion with the ideal environment to rest and recuperate. Each lion has individual needs due to their previous hardships, and Cam – who has recently been appointed as the charity’s new managing director – and his team will ensure they receive the physical and psychological care needed to recover from their ordeal.
It’s a devotion to the cause which you can only stand and admire.
An emotional moment
He explains: “Seeing their feet touch the grass for the first time in our state-of-the-art Lion Rescue Centre was an emotional moment for all involved. Nervous at first, all five cats are now starting to relax, play and explore their new habitat.”

Cam is no stranger to the charity. His grandfather is Peter Sampson – the man who created the sanctuary in Smarden back in 2000.
“It’s a privilege to continue my grandfather’s legacy,” he said. “The Big Cat Sanctuary will remain a hub for conservation, rescue, and education and with the support of the team, I’m confident we can help the sanctuary reach its full potential.”

What’s next for the sanctuary?

The new Lion Rescue Centre was officially opened on March 25 – with ambassador Paul Hollywood among the VIPs in attendance. The public will be able to visit and see the lions during the sanctuary’s open days in July.
Meanwhile, the fundraising continues.
In June, there will be another gala ball at Eastwell Manor – this year with the focus on raising awareness for more magnificent beasts – cheetahs. If you’re interested in attending the black-tie event, drop us a line. It’s a glamorous event and a chance for everyone involved to dig deep to help a really worthy cause. MMM – its staff and loyal clients – will continue to support it.
